I always suggest big PR pushes wait until you have actual customers using and ready to speak about the product. You can launch anytime. Having said that, novelty does appeal to media, so you might want to go stealth until you have those customers and then have your launch with the big PR push. Good luck!

Soft launch first, soft in terms of letting your network, partners, early adopters know "hey, we launched" and Jen is right - customers make great testimonials, case studies and the media like this stuff because its validating your great idea, product and or service. Also, Investors are leery of a big fat number in a business plan that says "big marketing and PR launch" BUT slightly happier when your [their] cash is used in conjunction with live customers. A big PR push is a bit like a firework - very pretty and interesting for about 30 seconds and then its gone! a PR strategy needs to be thoughtful, measured, constant and informative - keep the steam building - don't be a firework use all and every free social media outlet going and your PR strategy can look very joined up and "big" without to much cash!

It really depends on your product and objectives! Are you pushing for users, sales, or simply awareness? Are you B2C or B2B, and what kind of approach do the types of people whose attention you want tend to see from competitors/substitutes? Think these goals through and figure out where the marketing takes you. I personally tend to love doing a heavy PR push from launch if the idea/founder(s) is(/are) really media-sellable - how's your story? That said, I would never do this kind of a push without at least a few weeks of beta to work out kinks/whatever. Either way, if you craft the story properly, you can get the kind of attention you want - good luck!

I think that if you've already got quite a solid product, launch events such as DEMO would be great. They include tonnes of PR and ramp up for you if you've made it through the interview rounds. And coupled with the fact that they do give scholarships to selected start-ups and give you access to exhibit at the other 4 DEMO events worldwide for free, you'll pretty much cover the media in tonnes of markets. DEMO Asia will be held in February 2012, so that's something you could head towards to!
