You can message everyone who likes your page. That’s free communication with hundreds or thousands of people who are interested in your product, again and again. So yes, I believe that to be a benefit.

I found it also helps with traffic flow. When ever I post a news item on my current site, I post on Twitter, Digg, and also a summary on Facebook, with a read more link pointing back to the full story on my site. Just doing that has generated a lot of additional traffic to the site, and I've also steadily gained more likes on Facebook and followers on Twitter. This all helps towards the public beta and formal launch of the start up, and doesn't cost a penny.

I attach a link to my facebook page on outbound emails. I contact people by email with a specific email message about my facebook page.

Direct messaging is definitely a benefit, but so is sharing, interacting, responding to customer praise and complaints, and running "Facebook only" specials and promotions. I look at all social media as having two main purposes: promotional and customer service. A company without a presence on Facebook and Twitter (and Yelp as well) risks alienating potential clients and customers, many of whom use social media as their main way of interacting with businesses.
